Project Overview
- Complying with the stringent quality standards of the United States Navy
- Demolition and new construction while on an active military baseworking on a Superfund (abandoned hazardous waste) site
- Construction on a waterfront site adjacent to operational Navaltraining buildings
The Newport Naval Base was in great need of updated fitness areas. After assessing the current fields and recreation center, it became apparent that a complete rebuild was necessary in order to create an area that meets the needs of the Navy.
The new 66,000 sq. ft. fitness center offers improved athletic facilities for base residents and their families. This includes a reception area with natural light leading to a gymnasium, pool and fitness areas, housing racquetball courts and family fitness rooms. The high ceiling gymnasium features an elevated running track, which offers expansive views to the water.
In addition, the project utilized a formal partnering agreement to ensure smooth, effective resolution of all project challenges. During pre-construction, the team brought key mechanical subcontractors on board in a design-assist effort to work through potential constructability issues. The project achieved LEED Silver certification.
